Ad-free apps for kids: what to look for

By Mohammad Qadri, founder of Bapu's · 30 October 2026

A genuinely child-friendly app has no adverts, no in-app purchases or "unlock" buttons, no sign-up asking for a child's details, and collects as little data as possible. Check the store listing's "contains ads" and "in-app purchases" labels and the privacy details, then try the app yourself before handing it over.

Why it matters

Adverts in children's apps interrupt learning, and many are designed to get a tap. In-app purchases and timers that push for payment turn a game into a sales funnel. Young children cannot tell the difference between the game and the advert.

Checks before you download

  • Look for "Contains ads" and "In-app purchases" on the store page.
  • Read the privacy section: what data is collected, and is it linked to your child?
  • Be wary of "free" apps that need an account with your child's name, age or photo.
  • Check whether the app works offline; many that don't are fetching adverts.

Checks once it is open

  • Play for ten minutes yourself. Do adverts or pop-ups appear?
  • Look for locked levels, coins or gems that cost real money.
  • Look for links that leave the app and whether a grown-up check guards them.

Why Bapu's is free with no adverts

Bapu's was built by a grandfather who got fed up with adverts and pop-ups in his grandchildren's apps. All three Bapu's apps are free, with no adverts, no purchases and no sign-up, and progress stays on your own device.

Common questions

Are there truly free kids' apps with no ads?

Yes, though they are rare. Bapu's Little Learners, Bapu's Arabic School and Bapu's Arcade are free with no adverts, no in-app purchases and no sign-up.

What is the risk of in-app purchases in kids' apps?

Children can tap into purchases without understanding they cost money, and apps are often designed to encourage it. Use parental controls and prefer apps without purchases.

Do ad-free apps still collect data?

Some do. Check the privacy details. Bapu's collects nothing about your child; it only counts, anonymously, how often the apps are used.
